South Crete day trip from Heraklion with Matala beach time, hippie caves, and Odigitria Monastery, plus hotel pickup and guide.

“Matala was nice, although 5 Euro to get past a fence to look at the hippy caves!! The Gortyn ruins were disappointing with very limited structures and no signs providing any information. We couldn’t get reception for the information via the QR code. There seemed to be more ruins of the old city outside of the ticketed complex.”

★★★★★★★★★★4.6 · 29 reviews · 9 hours · from $79

A hard Samaria Gorge hike from Omalos Plateau, then a swim and one-hour boat ride from Agia Roumeli along Crete.

Full-day south Crete trip to Matala and caves with Red Beach time, plus a free beach festival, music stages, and a midnight return.

“The trip to Matala was very nice. It went from the north of Crete to the south. The ride goes through the mountains where you could enjoy really beautiful views. Matala is known for its caves where hippies lived in the 60s. Before entering the village, there is an olive tree with faces carved into its trunk. Matala itself consists of taverns, souvenir shops and textile-supplying shops. There is also a beach there, which is very gravelly and studded with stones in the water. The water gets deep very quickly and when you go in and out you sing deep into the gravel. It doesn't take much time to see…”

Matala Hippie Caves in southern Crete: coach ride, guided cave visit, beach time with swimming, snorkeling, and village wandering.
